At Table: Cleveland Culinaria opens at Heights Arts

Twenty-seven visual artists have partnered with some of Cleveland’s most creative culinary experts to transform the Heights Arts gallery into unique, themed installations that speak to the art of food and community through the materials we use to eat and drink. At Table: Cleveland Culinaria showcases the vision of chefs Doug Katz (Fire Food and Drink, Provenance); Marc-Aurele Buholzer (Vero Bistro); Bob Sferra (Culinary Occasions); food editor Noelle Celeste (Edible Cleveland); and food stylist Melissa McClelland.

At Table highlights our organization’s collaborative nature in a new way,” notes executive director Rachel Bernstein. “Through this project, we have combined many disciplines within the art world with something we can all connect to—food. Visual and culinary artists have worked together for several months to create a unique experience we can share with our community; through the exhibition, neighborhood activities, and food events at the gallery. I’m excited to experience the results, both personally and within our community.”

The culinary-themed installations include tablescapes, serveware, custom furniture, ceramics, glass, works in metal and fiber, along with photographs, drawings, prints, and paintings.

Five multi-course food events accompany At Table, each planned by one of the participating culinary innovators. Attendees will enjoy a hearty array of small plates and craft cocktails, along with lively conversation with chefs and artists in an intimate gallery setting. At Table: Food & Drink dates are Sunday, March 13; Sunday, March 20, Thursday, March 24; Monday, April 4; and Sunday, April 10. Ticketed reservations and menu descriptions for all food events are available at heightsarts.org.

The community may also enjoy related activities via Art-tinis & Creative Cocktails, a friendly neighborhood mixology contest where restaurants and bars compete for the title of most popular Heights Arts-inspired beverage, determined by popular vote. A list of participating establishments is available in the gallery or online. At Table: Cleveland Culinaria is on view through April 16.

Cleveland Heights artist Cathie Bleck is featured in the spotlight gallery from March 18 through April 30. Bleck, an internationally respected artist, is best known for her distinctive works in scratchboard and kaolin clay board. Her stylized forms are cut through inks and handmade pigments, revealing the white of the kaolin clay beneath. It is a process similar in concept to woodblock printing.

Opening April 22, Things That Fly showcases seven Northeast Ohio artists whose works address the concept of flight—from literal interpretation and fantastic, structural articulation to the reinvention of nature. Represented: Stephanie Craig, Maggie Denk-Leigh, Lori Kella, Peter Larson, Lynn Norwood Lofton, Lynn O’Brien and Christopher Owen Smith. A gallery talk and poetry reading will be held Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
