Risa Puno: Exhaust
Elena Harvey Collins: Deeper Structures
The use of odor as a storeytelling tool didn’t begin with Hans Laube’s “Smellovision,” which was deployed in Michael Todd, Jr.’s 1960 film Scent of Mystery, or even with Walter Reade, Jr.s film Behind the Great Wall, which was released three weeks earlier and used a system called “AromaRama.” Indeed, odor-enhanced film experience dates at least to 1929, when a theater in New York created an effect by spritzing perfume from its ceiling, and perhaps as early as 1906. And no wonder: who hasn’t been transported to another time and place by a distinctive smell? Brooklyn-based Risa Puno’s Exhaust installation at SPACES applies the idea to energy politics. To say it’s on view” through October 16 is correct, but misses the sensory point. It might be more accurate to say it’s “in the air.”
Meanwhile, in the Vault, Cleveland Heights-based Elena Harvey Collins has curated Deeper Structures, which also deals with alternative storytelling, but through Faulkner-esque slicing and dicing of video-based narrative structure. Artists include Dani Leventhal, Yvonne Carmichael, the Earcatcher collective, and Jibade-Khalil Huffman. Also through October 16. SPACES is at 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland. Call 216.621.2314 or go to SPACESgallery.org.

Body Proxy: Clothing in Contemporary Art
Clothes assume the shape of a body, but they also define our impressions of it. They communicate status and identity. The Allen Memorial Art Museum takes a look at clothes, not as fashion, but as subject, object, and raw material in the work of 30 artists, including Joseph Beuys, Jim Dine, Leonardo Drew, Robert Gober, Doris Salcedo, and Claes Oldenburg. Through December 13 at the Ellen Johnson Gallery, Allen Memorial Art Museum, 87 N Main St, Oberlin. Artist Jim Dine talks about Body Proxy, his work, and more at 5:30 pm September 3, at Hall Auditorium, 67 N. Main St., Oberlin. Call 440.775.8665, or go to oberlin.edu/allenart.

Shadows and Dreams: Pictorialist Photography in America
There was a moment when photography transitioned from simply being a tool of documentation to one of expression—not simply a way of capturing a subject, but a language to say something about it. The Cleveland Museum of Art has an extensive collection of Pictorialist photography, and for the first time offers an in-depth look at the way the medium evolved around the turn of the twentieth century. Works of Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Gertrude Käsebier, Edward Weston, Karl Struss, and Ohio artists such as Margaret Bourke-White and Jane Reece. Through January 17, 2016 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Blvd., Cleveland. Call 216.421.7340, or go to Clevelandart.org.

Moondance: BAYarts Annual Benefit
It’s probably sold out already, but you should check anyway, because BAYarts annual benefit is A) a huge party in a beautiful, Metroparks setting by Lake Erie, with bonfires, open bars, food from a dozen restaurants, and music by Cats on Holiday, and B) because they are honoring Zygote Press executive director and the person who conceived the Collective Arts Network, Liz Maugans. No tickets at the door, so get to your computer, or make the call now: 440.871.6543, or go to bayarts.net.

Nevet Yitzhak
The late, former Cleveland Museum of Art director Sherman Lee’s response to the Weather Underground’s 1970 bombing of the museum’s example of the Rodin bronze The Thinker was brilliant: He re-installed it, damage and all. And with its blown-apart base, but still intact from the ankles up, the 1880 sculpture became a part of the story of our time, too—a document of political unrest during the Vietnam War. Israel-based Multi-media artist Nevet Yitzahak was so taken by it during her exploration of the city earlier this year that she made it the subject of her video installation, commissioned by MOCA Cleveland. She documented the statue’s annual, ritualistic care by museum professionals and combined the footage with archival imagery and digital animation to connect the bombing incident to Rodin’s original subject for the statue, Dante Alighieri contemplating damnation and morality. The resulting film explores something just as relevant today–vandalism directed at art and religious icons, and the power those works hold in culture. It’s her first solo museum show in the United States. Through January 10 at MOCA Cleveland, 11400 Euclid Ave, Cleveland. Call 216.421.8671, or go to mocacleveland.org.

SPARX City Hop
Like a gateway drug, SPARX City Hop annually gives about 20,000 people a taste of something new– the burgeoning and constantly evolving art and food scenes in Cleveland’s neighborhoods in and around Downtown. Galleries and studios throughout the region open their doors to visitors who—everyone hopes—like what they see so much that they come back. It seems to be working. By any measure, Cleveland’s urban neighborhoods are on the rise. Organized by the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, SPARX City Hop offers an easy and systematic way to explore without having to deal with parking your car. Free trolleys run from 11 am to 6 pm. The East loop connects Playhouse Square and the Campus District, where you’ll find Cleveland State University Galleries and Bonfoey Gallery; the Superior Arts Corridor, where you’ll find Zygote Press, the Cleveland Print Room, Society for Photographic Education, City Artists at Work, and a multitude of individual artist studios; and Asia Town Center, where you’ll find Gadi Zamir’s Negative Space Gallery, installations of sculpture marking each year of the Chinese Zodiac, and more. The West loop takes you to The Gateway District, The Historic Warehouse District, where you’ll find Shaheen Gallery, Harris Stanton Gallery; Tremont, which is home to Steven Mastroianni’s studio, House Tremont, Doubting Thomas, and others; and Ohio City, where Transformer Station and SPACES anchor one end of the scene, and Canopy and Loren Naji’s gallery hold down the other. Of course there are approximately forty billion restaurants in between. For information, go to downtowncleveland.com.

Jen Craun: Of The Earth
Jen Craun stepped away from the role of Associate Director at Zygote Press to focus full time on her own work, with big results, including exhibits already this year at Urban Orchid and in Maria Neil Art Project’s space at the NOADA show at Transformer Station, and opening November 5, the first ever juried show at the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery in Columbus. The work itself is big, too–large wood intaglio prints that explore spatial relationships, journeys home and afar, and of course the behavior of ink and plates. She brings recent works to a solo show at BAYarts. The opening reception is 7 – 9 pm Friday, October 16. The show continues through November 8 in the Sullivan Family Gallery BAYarts is at 28795 Lake Road in the Cleveland Metroparks Huntington Reservation, Bay Village.
