Several diverse exhibitions open on December 3 at the McDonough Museum of Art, including the Fall 2021 Graduating BFA Exhibition, Katherine Williamson’s MFA Collaborative Project, Talking with Mascots, and Missy McCormick’s sabbatical research exhibition.

The Fall 2021 Graduating BFA Exhibition includes work by students graduating this fall semester from the Department of Art at YSU. Students in the Department of Art work closely with nationally and internationally known faculty engaged in a broad range of art and design practices. The Graduating BFA exhibition is the opportunity for students to share the original and innovative discoveries they have made in their artistic journeys, communicating to the public their creative expressions of human experience.

Talking with Mascots, featuring Francesca Baldarelli, Alex Ferrante, Jeremiah Ibarra, and Rachel Sanders, serves as a buffet of texture. Parts of the show beg for touch. The play of space and form has us recontextualize remnants; a void is as much a thing as its former fill. This show speaks to time, life, and consumption; the sensations and images of our in-betweenness, and how we might form our remnants into relational masses. These artists share the use of ledge-sitters–objects that gently cup the edge of their surface–objects on cusp. Parts that feel used or used up still offer us something; to take up space.

Missy McCormick, Department of Art faculty, displays current research that focuses on domestic objects that have been common in homes for centuries and carry out specific functions in daily life. The objects are examined and reimagined through a loose sense of Scandinavian and mid-century modern design, paired down with a focus on the practical, architectural, and essential elements. The result is a body of work that offers the comfort of the familiar with a sense of simplicity, reliability, and no-frills timelessness.
