Joshua Challen Ice, Secrets are Pondered, Projects Prepared

Calling all makers and artists! Join exhibiting artist Joshua Challen Ice at both The Sculpture Center and Ingenuity Cleveland to participate in a design-challenge and art-making workshop. Led by Joshua and working alongside a team of artists and engineers, partake in a DIY building session and see how limitations of materials and a team-based approach can guide the creation of a public piece which may be exhibited at this fall’s Ingenuity Festival. Following this year’s IngenuityFest theme of “Biologies and Geologies”, participants will be challenged to think in terms of organic design while transforming inorganic building materials in the process.

The program begins at The Sculpture Center with an artist talk and tour. Refreshments and snacks  will be provided free by Ingenuity Cleveland. Following this, the program continues at Ingenuity Cleveland where the design challenge will occur.

All supplies, materials, and tools will be provided. Be prepared to get messy and dress accordingly.

Eternal Repair, Carlow University Gallery, installation detail, 2023.

Joshua Challen Ice works with ideas related to science and philosophy through sculpture, kinetic, and light-based installation art. With a background in lighting design and technology for the stage, his work presents in many forms. Ice’s studio operates as a fabrication shop: a quasi laboratory for developing new ideas. Without limiting himself to one medium or even sensory experience, the tools, materials, and skills collected over time, instigate endless possibilities and explorations. Exhibiting in traditional and non-traditional gallery spaces such as Cultural Trust Gallery Crawls, Bricolage Immersive Theater, and Mattress Factory Museum, among others, has offered opportunities to experiment with many different formats and methods. Joshua graduated from Point Park University with a BFA in Lighting Design and Entertainment Technology and uses his theater training to create fully immersive works. Read more about his exhibition Secrets are Pondered, Projects Prepared on view July 7 – August 19, 2023 at The Sculpture Center.
