Deep Roots Experience presents Christa Freehands

Chaos, by Christa Freehands

Regular readers of CAN’s blog–or regular visitors to Deep Roots Experience Gallery at East 79th and Central Avenue–will recognize the bright palate of Christa Freehands.

Her work has stood out for its vivid color and sometimes for its sharp social and cultural commentary, consistently in the last several years. Recently the artist collaborated with DayzWhun on a mural as part of last summer’s Cleveland Walls festival.  She has installed work at Sauce the City. We’ve seen her painting in the exhibit, Who Are Your Heroes at Deep Roots: a portrait of Nat King Cole at the piano, his pin striped suit vibrant against the yellow background, splattered and dripping with color and surreal details. And another painting, in the Deep Roots exhibit SheArt Vol. II was “a righteously vicious attack on the fact that a whole industry has grown up around the idea that women should modify their bodies to please men, or themselves, or anyone at all,” as CAN Blog said.

In Winter 2021, Deep Roots presents Freehands Season, the artist’s first solo exhibition.  You will want to see what is on the mind of this rising talent.
