Summer Events 2021

Gwendolyn Garth (seated) is founder and director of Kings & Queens of Art, a nonprofit organization working with Presently and Formerly Incarcerated artists, to help reduce recidivism. She is currently seeking a step van or panel truck to serve as The Art Palace on Wheels—a vehicle to bring the Arts to Clevelanders who don’t frequent local
cultural institutions. She can be reached via KQOA.org.

Your easy, chronological guide to exhibits and opportunities at Northeast Ohio galleries, studios, and museums coming in the next few months. More information about many of these exhibits can be found elsewhere in the pages of CAN Journal.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, many art events planned for this summer have limited admission, and while almost all of them remain free, many require pre-registration. All in-person indoor events require wearing facial covering.

These listings are based on announcements from each presenting organization, at press time. Depending on the course of the disease and trends in rates of infection, events may be added, cancelled, or postponed. Check the CAN Weekly e-newsletter for the most up-to-date information. To subscribe to the free CAN Weekly, visit CANjournal.org and look for the “Join Our Email List” button on the right side of your screen.

Imagine Otherwise

A four-artist show that “expresses the boundlessness and fierceness of Black imagination and love despite ongoing antiBlack violence,” put together by moCa’s Gund Curator in Residence La Tanya S. Autry, its first on-staff Black curator. The artists include two from Cleveland—the extraordinarily perceptive photographer Amber Ford and painter Antwoine Washington, founder of the Museum of Creative Human Art—along with film-based artists Shikeith, who works out of Pittsburgh, and New York-based Imani Dennison. It’s unusual in that it takes place not only at moCa but also two locations in the community.

Totally Rad: Bold Color in the 1980s

The exhibit looks at the adventurous and expansive approach artists took toward color in this decade, drawing on neon and Day-Glo colors, pastels, and black-and-white contrasts. Video games, graffiti, fashion and MTV music videos all fueled this explosion as the rising glut of media created competition for attention.

Totally Radical: Art and Politics in the 1980s
This exhibit looks at the less colorful side of the period, as it explores the continuing push for racial justice and women’s rights, spurring more demands for minorities and women to be represented in art; the approaching dissolution of the Soviet Union remaking international relations; and the shadow of AIDS, which took a major toll on the creative community.

A New York Minute: Street Photography, 1920-1950
In the early 20th century, New York City was a feast for street photographers, with people of all types from all over the world arriving to seek a better life. They crammed into small apartments that often led to much of life happening outside on door stoops, fire escapes, park, beaches and streets. This gave photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Helen Levitt, Roy DeCarava, James Van Der Zee, Louis Stettner, Walker Evans, Lisette Model and others in this show plenty of material to train their lens upon.
