Winter at Valley Art Center

Call to Entry: Valley Art Center’s 35th Annual Art by the Falls

Valley Art Center is proud to present the 35th Annual Art by the Falls outdoor fine arts and contemporary crafts festival. Every year the event draws thousands of patrons to the banks of the Chagrin River, located in the middle of historic Chagrin Falls. An ideal setting for an outdoor festival, the Village’s popular Main Street overlooks two waterfalls and hosts a wealth of fine shops, galleries and restaurants.

The show features approximately 120 painters, potters, jewelers, woodworkers, fiber artists and other fine craftspeople. Also included in the event are live bands, a nonprofit village, a children’s booth, and a fine selection of food vendors.

Categories: Textiles, Glass/Enamel, Photography/Prints, Wood/Metal/Sculpture, Jewelry, Painting/Drawing, Ceramics, Other/Mixed Media

Encaustic is Hot at VAC

Rooted in history and mystery, encaustic is the art of painting with tinted, hot wax. Described by Pliny the Elder in 1 A.D., but originating centuries before even that, the Greeks used encaustic techniques to decorate warships and statuary, and to create long-lasting paintings. Now, this ancient art has enjoyed an exciting revival in the last century due to updated materials and techniques.

Valley Art Center is proud to take part in this revival through our new Encaustic workshops. Learn about this age-old process by transferring photocopies of images and text onto encaustic surfaces, creating your own artistic vision. Visit us at valleyartcenter.org/workshops to sign up, or call us for more details.

Identity: PEOPLE Call to Entry is Open

Identity is a strange and fascinating thing. Simultaneously concrete and plastic, fixed yet changeable according to perspective. Each of us can be by turn child and parent, student and teacher, artist and muse as the situation requires. We can also derive our individual identity from our gender, politics, heritage, and faith, among many other things, momentarily giving up our individuality and finding direction, continuity, and security in becoming part of a larger concept.

Valley Art Center in Chagrin Falls begins 2018 with the first in a three-year series of exhibits exploring concepts of identity with a focus on People, followed by Places in 2019, and Things in 2020. We invite 2D and 3D artists from the Chagrin Valley and around the world to submit their work exploring the theme through representations of people. Artists are encouraged to explore the concept of Identity as it pertains to people as individuals, or as a group. Artists may interpret the concept of identity in their own terms and may approach this call through any media and style.
