The Art of Exchange: Cuban Art in Cleveland

To add another dimension to the exchange of artists between Cleveland and Cuba that has been the focus of the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program for the past year, CIA has put together a show of work by more than a dozen contemporary Cuban artists, drawn from local private and public collections. Several of the featured artists have been Creative Fusion participants, spotlighting the cultural exchanges that are occurring.

50 Years of Fashion: Samples from the Ursuline Study Collection

One of the area’s little-known resources is the 3,500-item 20th-century fashion collection at Ursuline College. Used primarily as a study tool for students in the college’s acclaimed fashion program, giving them a hands-on opportunity to explore garment creation, this exhibit offers the wide community the chance to see some of these intriguing cultural artifacts.

From Riches to Rags: American Photography in the Depression

Drawing on its own extensive collection, which was launched during the Depression, CMA has put together this look at an era that produced a deluge of iconic images of the hard times Americans had fallen on. The legendary photographers that emerged—Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein—were documentarians, giving an intimate glimpse into the Depression’s impact. But it was also an era when photography was infiltrating advertising and when photographers such as Imogene Cunningham, Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams produced timeless images of the natural world. Those three strands are all accounted for here.

Drawing from his Outcasts and Other Rejects, Brides and Warriors, and Immigrant Stories series, the exhibit showcases his Magical Realism-based paintings, featuring people–often strong, dynamic women—in paintings crammed with visual symbols that create provocative narratives waiting to be decoded by the viewer.

Alchemy: Transformations in Gold

The old expression “All that glitters is not gold” is made visible in this group show of 16 international artists who incorporate gold or something that appropriates its look into their work, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. They’re making statements not only about gold’s traditional connotation of luxury and wealth but also the human cost of their attainment, suggesting the subjugation, violence, destruction and poverty that often lie beneath the surface of the glitter.

CAN Winter Issue Launch Party

7000 Marks: Sara Black & Amber Ginsburg

This pair of Chicago-based artists has turned a tanoak tree afflicted with Sudden Oak Death into 7,000 pencils. While the origin of the disease is unclear, quarantines have been introduced to prevent its spread, which the artists liken to the boundaries being created by the international rise in xenophobia and nationalism. It references and contrasts with conceptual artist Joseph Beuys’ 1982 7,000 Oaks project with its idealistic aim of introducing nature into an urban environment. During the exhibit’s run, the pencils will be used for curated activities, and the artists will collaborate with local artists, activists and scientists to explore our relationships with nature, adaptation and survival. Through January 12.

Halim Ina

Cleveland dentist-turned-photographer Halim Ina has traveled the world, particularly to India, where he returns regularly, as well as Africa and the Americas, training his camera on the people of those regions. His intimate portraits, mostly in black & white, aim to evoke empathy, raise awareness and create connections. His work isn’t hit-and-run. He returns to the countries to shoot his subjects over time and share the photos he’s taken previously. And he uses the proceeds from selling his photos to fund projects in the countries he visits, such as building schools for girls.

Materialized: Seven Artists Working in Metal

This show features the work of local artists Matthew Hollern, Jacquie Wynn Kennedy, Seth Nagelberg, and Stephen Yusko, along with curator Pamela Argentieri, David Deming, and Mark Hartung, showcasing both traditional and new ways of using metal to invent form and make a statement with the medium. The show will give visitors the chance to see how the objects evolve into their finished form with sketches, models, patterns and prototypes. “The work of these artists reminds us of several themes, industrial vernacular, the study of form and function, innovative use of technology, and visual metaphor,” says Argentieri.
