In-Depth with Deborah Pinter’s Natural Order and Chaos at BAYarts

Natural Order and Chaos, a series of monoprints by Deborah Pinter, explores a merging of the organic plant life and imperfect happenstance with the artist’s seasoned expertise.

“I have always been one who looks for the order in things, but as I have gotten older it is the imperfections, the happy accidents, that I appreciate,” Pinter says. This led her to the organic nature of monoprints. “I find them very exciting and I love the fact that I am never quite sure exactly what I am going to see when I lift the paper off the inked plexi.” The process of trial-and-error with the pieces is crucial for this body of work, which playfully merges circular compositions with square paper.

“The first print usually never sees the light of day,” explains Pinter. “It is usually the second print or the ghost print that I am much more interested in producing.” After removing materials (leaves, flowers, sticks) from the plexiglass, the press is run again. “That is how I am able to get the amazing details, shallow depth of field and slight hint of other colors.” The pale tints of colors, she adds, are from the plants.

These monoprints capture reflective moments that are a result of “slowing down and reacting to what’s in front of me.” Pinter’s piece “20-2016” displays this. Deciding against using the original background, a stencil was employed with the next print. “This allowed me to change the composition more to my liking and control some of the natural imperfections in the print.” The resulting balance is a series of artwork that holds a wildness in the DNA of its creation.
