The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve (AAWR) is pleased to announce its upcoming Summer exhibition, NewCelle, featuring the collaborative drawings of Archived Artist Bea Mitchell, John Jackson, Ed Mieczkowski and Achala Wali.

NewCelle formed as a group in 1998 with the purpose of “revitalizing drawing in the light of the coming new Millennium.”  Influenced by the Surrealists’ technique of Automatism or automatic drawing, the artists would take turns working on a single circular surface, transcending collaboration in pursuit of what they called a “shared mind.”  The group chose to focus almost exclusively on the subject of line in their drawings, minimizing properties such as texture and value, and to stay within the confines of a visible ring while creating with ink, paint, marker and graphite.   While communal work forms the core of the exhibition, pieces done by each individual artist will be displayed, including a large-scale piece by Ed Mieczkowski nearly ten feet in length.  Opening reception will be held 5:30 – 8pm Thursday, May 18.

Collecting Outsider Art

On Saturday, May 27th from 1 – 3pm, the Artists Archives hosts Collecting Outsider Art with Thomas Wagner.  This Collecting Art Talk is a continuation of ART BITES, a series of ongoing programs that offer information for artists and like-minded individuals.  Collecting Art Talks are specifically designed to promote the idea of art as an economic engine, stimulating the local economy by pulling together artists, art collectors and those involved in the professional art world.

PhotoNow

The Artists Archives also announces its biennial competitive photography exhibition PhotoNow to be held in the beautiful, 3,000 square-foot Gallery East of Cuyahoga Community College’s, eastern Campus (4250 Richmond Rd, Highland Hills), beginning with an opening reception 8:30 pm Thursday, September 7.  The AAWR invites all photographers who currently reside in the USA to submit images using any photographic process (silver gelatin, digital print, alternative process, etc.) Experimental and mixed techniques are welcome.  Cash awards will be given in four categories.  All entries must be submitted online via Smarter Entry at artistsarchives.org between April 11 and July 1, 2017.
