Valley Art Center honors Women’s History
Women’s Work: An Exhibition in Conjunction with Women’s History Month
Celebrate Women’s History Month with Valley Art Center‘s powerful exhibition of art by women of the region. Women’s Work is guest-curated by Mary Urbas, Gallery Director at Lakeland Community College. The exhibiting artists include Lissa Bockrath, Kerri Gortz, Suzan Kraus, Samantha Meyers, Sandy Miller, Beth Nash, Betty Skufca and Jaymi Zents.
“All these artists create their own worlds,” Urbas explains, “—a world that encapsulates their dreams and visions. The works represented are narrative; they tell a story.” The artists’ visual stories read as both personal and universal, balancing recognizable, often symbolic imagery with original styles and design. “These works strike a balance between realistic and surreal subject matter and compositions,” Urbas says.
The artists represent a variety of media. Four of the artists are painters working on canvas, Plexiglass, and wood. Two of the artists are sculptors working with handmade paper, clay, textiles and found objects. Visitors to Women’s Work will find much to see in this exhibit of compelling works.
One of Urbas’s goals is to give the Chagrin Falls community the opportunity to see strong work by women artists who have not frequently exhibited in venues throughout the Valley. Women’s Work coincides with events and exhibits at over 60 local establishments that will be acknowledging Women’s History Month including galleries, art centers, community centers, and studios.
Call to Entry: Valley Art Center’s 34th Annual Art by the Falls
Valley Art Center is proud to present the 34th Annual Art by the Falls outdoor fine arts and contemporary crafts festival. Every year the event draws thousands of patrons to the banks of the Chagrin River, located in the middle of historic Chagrin Falls. An ideal setting for an outdoor festival, the Village’s popular Main Street overlooks two waterfalls and hosts a wealth of fine shops, galleries and restaurants.
The show features approximately 120 painters, potters, jewelers, wood workers, fiber artists and other fine craftspeople. Also included in the event are live bands, a nonprofit village, a children’s booth, and a fine selection of food vendors.
