New Collaborations at BAYarts

Carlson and Utter:  Between Presence and Projection  

John W. Carlson and Douglas Max Utter will be exhibiting together in the Sullivan Family Gallery at Bay Arts, openingJanuary 6, 2017!  Longtime friends with different styles and points of view, Carlson and Utter each possess a unique way of handling provocative subject matters using traditional and non-traditional materials.  Carlson combines oils, alkaloids, charcoal and graphite, emphasizing the negative space without sacrificing the subtle emotional details that define his work.  Utter works in black pastels, oil paint, acrylic and varnishes to relay highly personal stories and memories.  Curated by Hilary Gent of HEDGE Gallery. Opening reception 7 – 9 pm January 6 in the Sullivan Family Gallery. Exhibit January 6 – 28, 2017

Interiors

“Interiors” by Karen Petkovic

Inspired by Woody Allen’s 1978 homage to Ingmar Bergman, “Interiors” examines the close relationship women have between the physical and psychological interiors they create for themselves. Curated by BAYarts Artistic Director Karen Petkovic, this artist invitational will feature 10 women artists working in various mediums.  Opening reception 7 – 9 pm February 3. Liz Maugans: Irreverent Sketches/and the Things That (I Think) People are Thinking: The City Pool & People in Church  

March 10 – April 7

Maugans shares her candid drawings of people she encounters in public places, adding her own commentary on what they are thinking. These sketch book drawings representative Maugans’ unique ability to observe and commentate on the everyday and make it extraordinary. In the Dianne Boldman Gallery. Opening with the Annual Juried Show on March 10, 7 – 9.
