Dexter Davis + Jason K. Milburn, Individual and Collaborative Works
through October 18
William Busta Gallery
Jason K. Milburn says he and Dexter Davis have long talked about the similarity in their works, both in terms of style and subject matter. Indeed, both combine drawing and printmaking techniques, and use human figures to portray deep emotional complexity. They both studied printmaking and drawing at the Cleveland Institute of Art–but more than a decade apart. And, as it happens, both work as security guards at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It wasn’t until their work was hung together in CMA’s most recent staff show, however, that they talked about doing a show together. The opportunity arose when William Busta Gallery had scheduled both for upcoming exhibitions. They took advantage of the occasion not only by opening a show together, but by collaborating on some of the works. Not to be missed the same night at Busta’s are new works by Bellamy Printz and Barbara Polster, who returns from Seattle to bring her installation “A super[Symmetry]. Three exhibits . . . Four artists . . . One venue, opening from Friday, September 5 at William Busta Gallery,2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland. Call 216.298.9071, or go to williambustagallery.com.

ArtNeo, CAN Journal, the City Club of Cleveland, and Cleveland Public Library present On and Off The Wall
The idea that an art scene needs public discussion has motivated CAN Journal since our beginning. Nina Gibans and ArtNeo, formerly the Cleveland Artists Foundation, have long shared this idea. The natural alignment with the citadel of free speech–the City Club of Cleveland–makes the three ideal partners to host a new series of discussions about art and art-making here. Cleveland Foundation Director of Arts Initiatives Kathleen Cerveny gives the Keynote Address as ArtNeo kicks off the series with two panel discussions: first, “Street-Smart Studios: Laboratories for Ideas and Concepts;” and second, “Concepts and Issues Facing Local Artists, Collectors And Art Lovers Today.” Featured panelists, speakers and moderators include Pam Eyerdam (Cleveland Public Library), John Farina (ARTneo, Maria Neil Art Project), Michael Gill (CAN Journal), James Gibans (ARTneo), Robert Maschke (Robert Maschke Architects), Liz Maugans (Zygote Press), Dan Moulthrop (City Club of Cleveland), Barbara Robinson (arts advocate), Tom Schorgl (Community Partnership for Arts & Culture), and William C. Tregoning (Tregoning & Co.). Sponsored by CAN Journal, Cleveland Public Library, the City Club of Cleveland, and ArtNeo. It’s 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 13 at the Main Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, 325 Superior Ave. East, Cleveland. Call 216.623.3800 or 216-227-9507, or go to artneo.org.

Three Amigos: Ron Joranko, Ron Johnston, and Loren Naji
Artists Archives of the Western Reserve
What’s lost in a friendship when one friend passes away is indescribable, but it lives on for the survivor and the rest of us in the projects they shared. For Loren Naji and Ron Johnston, a friendship with the late Ron Joranko lives on in each of their paintings. Works of Joranko–who took up painting late in life after a career as a tax accountant–are preserved by the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, which shines new light on them with the juxtaposition of works by his surviving friends. Joranko, Johnston, and Naji all are skilled in traditional figurative, landscape, and still-life painting. Opening reception 5 to 8 pm Thursday, September 18, through October 24 at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, 1834 East 123rd St., Cleveland. Call 216.721.9020, or go to artistsarchives.org.

Cinema 05
Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery
If artists responding to the world can produce fantasy and inspired commentary, artists responding to other artists and art forms can make even greater leaps. That’s the territory explored in what has become an annual Fall tradition at Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery–a group show featuring work by artists responding to film–both specific works, and the process itself. Last year’s installment had Michael Abarca juxtaposing images inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress and George Lucas’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; Kasumi exhibiting images from her own film, Shockwaves; Dave Jupp responding to James Whale’s The Bride of Frankenstein; Micah Sherrill to Mann Ray’s The Starfish; and Scott McIntire to Percy Adlon’s Bagdad Cafe, among more than a dozen others. We can only imagine what this artistic cross-pollination will yield in Cinema 05. Opening reception 5-9 pm Friday, September 19, through November 15 at Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery, 1305 West 80th St., Cleveland. Call 216.6316719, or go to kennethpaullesko.com.

Sparx City Hop
Cleveland is so rich in galleries, we have not just one art district, but several of them, in neighborhoods all over town. Most of the time, that makes a city-wide art walk impossible. But for a dozen years, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance has knit the city’s art districts together via free Lolly the Trolly tours in the annual Sparks City Hop, an all-day affair with more than 70 galleries participating. Free trolley service loops through Tremont, Ohio City, St. Clair Superior, Gateway, and the Warehouse District. In between studio visits and gallery tours, you can refuel at more than 100 participating restaurants. Among a whole bunch of CAN members participating this year are City Artists at Work in the Heller Building (2218 Superior) and Harris Stanton Gallery’s new Cleveland location in the Warehouse District (1370 West 9th Street). New this year is a Trolley Hub under Playhouse Square’s big, glitzy chandelier, which makes not only for efficient tour routes, but also an easy-to-find, central location. Trolley Service takes you all over the gallery scene from 11 a.m. to 6 pm Saturday, September 20. For information, go to downtowncleveland.com/sparx.

Kirk Mangus: Things Love
MOCA
Kirk Mangus’s ceramic works often have a child-like quality. Just as frequently, they look to be thousands of years old. The turnout of some 300 guests at a memorial service honoring the late ceramic artist was fitting for a man who led Kent State University’s Ceramics Department since 1985. Mangus died of a brain aneurysm Nov. 24, 2013. It’s also fitting that MOCA Cleveland celebrate the prolific artist’s work, which drew on ceramic traditions from Asia and Meso-America, as well as comics, prehistoric cave drawings, and modernist abstraction, among other influences. Organized by MOCA associate curator Rose Bouthillier, the exhibit includes ceramic works large and small, from cups and vases to larger pots and sculpture. Bouthillier has also chosen some of the artist’s sketchbooks and drawings, for deeper understanding of the way the artist approached the world and his craft. It’s the first comprehensive comprehensive museum show of his work. September 26, 2014 — January 18, 2015 at MOCA Cleveland, 11400 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Sid Rheuban at 90
1point618 Gallery
It’s usually printmakers who think in reverse, but the same and more applies to Sid Rheuban. Rheuban, who took up painting in his late 60s, paints large portraits on Plexiglass, to be viewed through what would, on canvas, be the back side. Making the underbelly of the painting as its face has another effect–The first marks he makes with a brush are the ones the viewer sees through the glossy surface of the glass. Flexible Domain: Matthew Kolodzeij and Andrea Joki
Harris Stanton Gallery, Akron
Big canvases with deep accumulations of paint, highly organized along clear, intersecting lines and planes mark the works of both Andrea Joki and Matthew Kolodzeij. While Kolodzeij’s works often reference architecture and even street scenes, Joki’s are more completely abstract. They’ve both shown at William Busta Gallery for years, but will have deliberate juxtaposition in Flexible Domain, a two-person show at Harris Stanton Gallery’s original, Akron location. through December 6.
