Women Behind the Lens at CPR: Vivian Maier and Hidden Mother exhibits round out the winter schedule

The Cleveland Print Room’s second year gets off to an auspicious start with the Ohio debut of Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows, an exhibition featuring the stunning work of the late “nanny-photographer,” whose work dates from the 1940s through the mid-1970s, but was first discovered in Chicago storage lockers in 2007.

The show’s public opening reception, on Friday, January 10, will be preceded the evening before with a special Full Exhibit Preview fundraiser. While the majority of the traveling exhibition will be on display through February 23, we will only be showing the full 51-photo exhibit on Thursday, January 9 from 5 – 9pm. This $50 preview evening, with proceeds going to support CPR’s mission, also features a cocktail reception and souvenir event tickets.

Continuing the theme of Women Behind the Lens, our invitational March show is an exhibition of “Hidden Mother” photography featuring more than a dozen Northeast Ohio women photographers. This exhibit deals with modern interpretations of the Victorian-era phenomenon of child portraiture featuring concealed or camouflaged mothers holding their infant children to ensure a cooperative pose.

Early this Spring, CPR will join NewBridge Cleveland Center for Arts & Technology in welcoming Taiwanese photographer Chin-pao Chen to Cleveland for a three-month residency. Chen will be working in the Print Room with NewBridge’s after school photography program as part of the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion project.
