The Snail Mail Paper Trail and More, at the Morgan

Kick off the Fall art season by attending the Morgan Conservatory’s Annual Open House and Silent Art Auction. The fun starts at 6:00pm, Saturday, October 5as we toast to our 6th successful year of workshops, exhibitions, and community. You’ll enjoy live music, sample our famous hors d’oeuvres table and–with a drink in hand–make your way to the papermaking, bookbinding, and letterpress demonstrations … and the ‘Snail Mail/Paper Trail’ art auction. Just grab a pen and start bidding!

Each year the Morgan invites local and nationally known artists to create new works using our handmade paper created specifically for this event. This year we expect to have over 100 works for you to bid on.

There is a variety of other artwork, and as Tom Balbo, Artistic Director, likes to say, “many surprise items” … like a chocolate purse from Sweet Designs, or a Serizawa print. Past auctions have included works by by Liz Maugans, Karen Beckwith, Claudio Orso, Yuko Kimura, Mike Gold, Cat Richards, Phyllis Kohring Fannin, Michael Gill, Karen Kunc, Julie McLaughlin, Melissa Jay Craig, Beatrice Coron, and master bookbinder, Anna Embree, just to name a few.

Join us for our one big fundraiser of the year; it wouldn’t be the same without you!

Art Books Cleveland ABECEDARIA VI

Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books III

October 12-November 30

Creative art books will abound in this double exhibit. Art Books Cleveland, housed at the Morgan Conservatory, presents art books exploring the alphabet, or an aspect of the alphabet in beautiful, clever, and sometimes whimsical book forms.

This year feature their first guest artist, the renowned Alicia Bailey, owner of Abecedarian Gallery in Denver, Colorado. One of the original founders of Octavofest, ABC is dedicated to exploring, encouraging, and teaching both contemporary and traditional artistic practices of the hand-made book.

Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books III, an international traveling exhibition of object books is curated by local artist and educator, Hui-Chu Ying, professor of art of the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art. The exhibit is a collaborative and educational project comprised of the work of over 100 visual artists. The artists have taken on the challenge of scaling down thoughts, text, images and materials and transformed them into readable, workable small-scale artists books that are a pleasure to handle, read and exhibit.

Both events are part of Octavofest, northeast Ohio’s month long celebration of book and paper arts www.octavofest.org.
