The Morgan: Your Papermaking, Book Arts, and Print Fix.
The Morgan Conservatory is the Cleveland spot where you can get your papermaking, book arts, and print fix. This year’s schedule is the best-ever, offering top caliber local and national instructors teaching a wide variety of art forms. Our workshops are designed to educate and inspire novice and professional artists alike.
We have some exciting changes in store for 2013. By popular request, we are offering our first-ever four day workshop, “Your Ideas, Your Paper, Your Books,” beginning Thursday, June 13. It combines the unmatched talent of Deborah Howe (Collections Conservator, Dartmouth College Library) and Amanda Degener (Co-Proprietor, Cave Paper in Minneapolis), to teach hand papermaking, dyeing, and bookbinding.
Another can’t miss workshop is “Big Ass Papermaking Part II,” August 9-11, taught by renowned Iowa-based artist Julie McLaughlin. In this hands-on, feet-in workshop, students will work in teams to pull sheets of 6’X9′ Kozo paper that’s even strong enough to sew.
For book enthusiasts, we have a wide variety of workshops to choose from. Cris Takacs, owner of Books Bound & Repaired is teaching “Paring Leather for Books” the weekend of August 10, in which students will make custom designed leather book covers and decorative elements. September 14-15, Sharon Sharp will teach “Exploring Every Angle: Complex Effects with Simple Book Forms.” Students will make a minimum of six books based on her samples. One of the books she is demonstrating was recently selected by juror Julie Chen for the second volume of 500 Handmade Books, set for release around the time of her workshop.
Our remaining print workshops are taught by hometown favorites. Oberlin professor Claudio Orso teaches “Carving A New Groove” September 7-8. Students will come with ideas that are ready to be transformed into woodcuts, wax plates and collographs. The season concludes the weekend of September 14with Michael Gill, editor and publisher of CAN Journal teaching “GANG UP: So many pages, so little time,” a workshopwhere students will make their very own chapbookusing our Vandercook letterpresses.
Our full schedule of workshops, course description and instructor biographies can be found on our new website. Class space is limited and early registration is recommended.
