Sue Kirchner’s, Centuries Beneath My Feet, a stunning yet subtle and visually compelling solo exhibit opens at Still Point Gallery, Friday, June 22nd (6:00 – 8:00 p.m.) .  This will be Sue’s 4th exhibit since 2011, the second featuring the medium of encaustics and the first for her “photo” encaustics, mixing an ancient and modern medium. Through her mastery of both encaustic technique and her remarkable sense of composition, Sue’s “photo encaustics” pull us back into antiquity, into a realm of ancient history that conveys a profound sense of  time and place. The stones, bricks, pebbles and rock carvings free our imagination to trace, wonder and muse about who passed before, how culture evolved and what myriad stories have been ground into the earthly landscape. The combination of subtle imagery and the luminous opacity of the bee’s wax combines to create unique pieces of enduring art that will survive generations, indeed centuries.

That Sue is one of Ohio’s most accomplished artists is undeniable. Those familiar with her diverse work recognize her remarkable talents and insatiable creativity.  In many respects she is a disrupter, often inverting traditional models and ways of seeing as she does in this exhibit.  As others encourage us to “look to the heavens”, Sue finds mystery and meaning in the opposite direction.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards including the gold medal for best of show from the nationally prestigious Ohio Watercolor Society and a coveted Ohio Arts Council Artist’s Fellowship.
