Still Point is very excited to host a solo exhibit for Marti Higgins, one of this area’s outstanding artists and one frequently featured in galleries and shows throughout northeast Ohio. Inspired through her observation and interaction with the natural world, Marti has made her name and reputation studying and experimenting with color,
What struck us about Marti’s work was her intuitive, almost “instinctive” use of color, carefully positioning and overlaying into a collage a broad range of vibrant hues and subtle shades as a means to explore their relationships and evocative powers. It’s worth noting that Paul Klee approached abstract expressionism in a similar manner, studying, understanding and effectively employing the interaction of color to communicate emotions and ideas.
Created from acrylic painted strips of paper, cut, torn and overlaid on canvas, “Some Still Remains” is the show’s signature piece and a considerable work at 40″x60”. The effect of layering and overlapping enhances texture and dimensionality, creating subtle transitions where shadows form along tear lines. Marti’s work is echoed in the simple and brilliant observation of John Ruskin whose aesthetic vision was at once distilled and expanded by his view of the world as “an arrangement of patches of different colors”.
Join us for an opening reception with the artist Friday, July 14, 6:00-8:30. Refreshments provided. Exhibit runs from July 14 to September 2.
