Barbara Martin is fascinated by the presence of life, past and present. She scours flea markets, garage sales, and antique shops to find remnants of lives lived long, long ago. A broken toy, a bill of sale, an old tool are all enchanting to her and she often combines them to express her distress with current political, ecological, and social issues. In contrast, her scratchboard bird “portraits” reflect her awareness and respect for the natural world in the here and now.
