Winter 2024-2025 Events

Revelers in Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night, Tremont–a participatory work of performance art in which people join by streaming one of four recorded parts of the composition over a bluetooth speaker while they walk through the neighborhood. Meet at 6:30 pm at the Lincoln Park Gazebo in Tremont. The walk starts at 7 pm.

This is your easy, chronological guide to exhibits and opportunities at Northeast Ohio galleries, studios, and museums coming in the next few months. More information about many of these exhibits can be found elsewhere in the pages of CAN Journal.

Skull & Bones
When Mary Urbas, director of the Gallery at Lakeland Community College, was laid off this summer, a major gallery space in Northeast Ohio went dark. But she’s been looking around the area for alternative spaces to curate her popular shows, such as her biennial Skull and Skeleton Show. She’s presenting a stripped-down version this year—not quite as many artists to ride herd on—at the gallery at the University of Akron Myers School of Art where gallery director Arnold Tunstall has co-curated the Skull & Bones show, featuring the work of 20 local and regional artists as opposed to 100+. In addition, the UA art students organized a show of skull art in the atrium adjacent to the gallery.

In his second exhibition at this gallery, Powell continues to look at the artifice of painting, exploring abstraction and representation, and the subject as decoy. Zooming in mundane objects such as pencils and cigarettes, he imbues the objects with multiple meanings that reward closer viewing. Using the three figures in the show’s title as shaped canvases, he pulls away from the idea of the rectangular canvas and all the meanings and associations it brings.

The heART of Cleveland volume 2 Release Party
In 2018 Scott Kraynak assembled a book called The HeArt of Cleveland, assembling about 70 visual creatives to contribute. Its success spawned a second volume, which is being released with an accompanying show at HEDGE Gallery. Kraynak aimed for even greater diversity the second time around and some of the artists who contributed to the first book have done portraits of other artists they admire. The exhibition will feature work by as many of the contributing artists as were able to get a piece submitted, in a salon-style display.

This New York-based Pakistani native’s sound and video installation draws from the folk culture of her native region in northern India. The fleeting song fragments, in a no-longer-used language, suggest the disruptions the region has endured since the violence around the 1947 Partition, which caused the artist’s family to become refugees.

BE/longing: With or Without You
This show takes its title from one of the band U2’s best-known songs from its 1987 album The Joshua Tree. In it, the 15 artists take off on one of U2 singer Bono’s explanations for the song: that it’s about internal tension, his fraught relationship with himself, responding, the show’s statement tells us, “to the precariousness of life through the expression of longing, grief, and spirituality.”

d.a. levy: Subversive Printmaking in 1960s Cleveland
d.a. levy was a noted Cleveland poet of the 1960s whose work bridged the Beat and hippie eras. He published a series of books and underground zines, all of which he did by hand. He was also an artist who left behind a large collection of his print work when he committed suicide in 1968 at the age of 26. That’s the aspect of his work this show at Zygote will focus on, sharing some of his (luckily) preserved cache of work and exploring his mixed legacy. Zygote is also planning special events around this show; stay tuned.

Kelli Connell: Pictures for Charis
Edward Weston was one of the early 20th century’s most notable photographers; writer Charis Wilson was his wife and frequent model. American photographer Kelli Connell has studied their relationship by delving into her writings and his landscape and nude photos. She mingles her interpretation of their story with her own relationship with her then-partner Betsy Odom, adding a queer, feminist perspective. Connell and Odom re-created the Weston/Wilson relationship at sites where the earlier couple had spent time. This show includes both Connell’s resulting photos and Weston’s landscapes and figure studies taken between 1934 and 1945, the years he was with Wilson.

The Color and the Shape, the Mark and the Make – Installation by Jonah Jacobs, Paintings by Eric Rippert and Sean Wheeler
Three noted local artists combine forces for this show of striking work. Jacobs uses paint and dye to transform pieces made from cardboard, single-use packaging and other waste into evocative sculptures that mimic organic forms. Wheeler’s large, colorful paintings draw on textures that suggest the weathered surfaces of old Rust Belt buildings and the weighty, looming presence of those structures. Rippert’s body of work has been diverse, occasionally playful, occasionally sinister. He says, “My new paintings are the result of reconnecting with the guttural intuitiveness and dissociating with structured belief systems.”
