BAYarts Celebrates the Holidays and Showcases Faculty

Artists of BAYarts Education Department faculty, on the front steps at Sullivan Family Gallery.

BAYarts will be showcasing our faculty in an exhibition this January. We are looking forward to sharing with the community and the local art scene the amazing talent we have in our Education Department. Opening January 10, 2025, we will be featuring thirteen artists—all of them part of our esteemed faculty, and all of them artists with their own artistic practice that elevates what they bring to the classroom.

When asked to share how her artistic practice affects the way she instructs her students, BAYarts painting instructor Patty Flauto said, “abstract painting requires not just doing but also thinking. In my art making and, in my teaching, creativity and contemplation are both essential. Each class session involves analysis of color, composition and decision making that resonates with each artist in a unique way.”

James Giar works with our youth Art Club students. He shared this insight about his approach in the classroom: “For me, when I work, I’m reminded of what I constantly drive into my students’ brains, that failure is not a bad thing. Not in art. We are raised with the concept that failure is defeat. But failure in art is the beginning of a path. A path that leads to exploration, expression and possibilities. Hopefully by the time we reach that destination, you end up with some form of truth.”

A big part of the BAYarts mission is to support artists and students of all ages and levels through education. Our Education Director Linda Goik has put together a team of dedicated, talented, and innovative art educators that supports this mission. Each season—winter, spring, summer, and fall—we provide a varied schedule of new classes for both children and adults. Our students learn in a supportive environment surrounded by teachers who are skilled and passionate about what they do. This exhibition will give the faculty an opportunity to show their own work in our Sullivan Family Gallery.
