Summit Artspace Introduces Quarterly Exhibition Cycle

Two Figures Standing

Located in the Historic Arts District of downtown Akron, Summit Artspace empowers local artists by connecting them with the resources they need to thrive. Home to over thirty resident artists and artist-supporting organizations, it functions as a hub to create, appreciate, and purchase local art. The nonprofit arts organization recently made the shift to a quarterly exhibition cycle in its five galleries, with new shows four times each year. The galleries and resident artist studios are open to the public on Fridays from noon to 7:00pm and Saturdays from 11:00am to 5:00pm.

FALL EXHIBITIONS

Fall exhibitions are on view at Summit Artspace through December 18. Kaleidoscope, the long-standing annual juried exhibition organized by the Alliance for the Visual Arts (AVA), serves as a vibrant metaphor for the fall season’s exhibition lineup. “Each exhibition shines light to illuminate a unique angle, facet, or reflection from more than ninety local artists’ perspectives,” remarks Natalie Grieshammer Patrick, director of artist resources. “The exhibition gains its namesake from the handcrafted kaleidoscope offered to the People’s Choice honoree each year and is open to members of four vital Summit County artist organizations—the Akron Society of Artists, the Artists of Rubber City, the Women’s Art League, and the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center.” The 19th Annual Kaleidoscope Juried Exhibition is on view in the Betty and Howard Taylor Main Gallery. This year’s juror is Alexandra N. Coon, executive director at the Massillon Museum.

TinkeRings by Kristina Malcolm is on view in the 3G Gallery. Malcolm elevates kinetic jewelry to fine art through exquisite craftsmanship and creates a healing experience for the wearer. These jewelry pieces are not unlike the kaleidoscopes that inspired the AVA’s annual exhibition.

In addition to being featured in Kaleidoscope, The Women’s Art League leaves its mark in the Transition Gallery with The Women’s Art League Fall Member Exhibition. The Women’s Art League unites women artists of Akron who are interested in the advancement of the arts in the community. In the Second Floor Gallery, A Tradition: Kent State Print Media exhibits a selection of artwork from alumni, students, staff, and faculty of the Print Media and Photography Department at Kent State University, co-curated by graduate students Alex Anthes, Amirah Cunningham, and Brittany Gorelick, and Professor J. Leigh Garcia.

The theme of printmaking extends into the woodcuts of artist Meryl Engler, whose solo exhibition Babe…I Thought explores the devolution of a relationship through the symbol of the chain link fence. Babe…I Thought is on view in Summit Artspace’s Welcome Gallery.

WINTER EXHIBITIONS

Winter exhibitions open on January 14 and continue through March 26. Group exhibitions include the FRESH juried exhibition and In Kind: Art Alive. Solo exhibitions feature artists Kenn Hetzel, Diane Pribojan, and Jacob Mollohan. Community Postcards from the Akron Art Library will also be displayed.
