Akron U. Emily Davis Gallery Presents Material Reckoning

Rina Dweck, Sinner II, assorted hosiery, synthetic hair, poly-fil, soil, lace, lace ribbon, macramé, decals, thread, rubber bands, beading, 40 X 34 X 4 inches, 2019. Courtesy of the artist.

Material Reckoning is on display at Emily Davis Gallery, featuring the work of Sheila Pepe (Brooklyn NY), Rina Dweck (Brooklyn NY), Jamele Wright Sr. (Ohio-born; Atlanta GA), and Cleveland Art Prize Emerging Artist Lauren Yeager (Cleveland OH). These artists work with found objects and materials to explore how what we make and leave behind defines us. Celebrating cultural identity while addressing the impact of trauma and stereotypes, the exhibition reflects on and reconsiders collective rituals and exchanges. Drawing on the use and meaning of everyday objects, the assemblages and sculptures on view offer clues and evidence of who we are in this moment.

Lauren Yeager, Thermos Column, found objects, 2020. Collection of Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell.

Coming this spring to Emily Davis Gallery, Passion and Joy features the artwork made by practicing professional artists with developmental differences from Passion Works Studio (Athens OH) and Planet Joy Studio (Medina OH). As people who are historically perceived as unemployable, non-viable citizens, these artists can create visual evidence of the depth and wealth of the creative human spirit.
