Cleveland Arts Prize Nomination Process Evolves

Each year after the Annual Awards Event, the Cleveland Arts Prize (CAP) Prize Committee reviews both the awards process and the feedback. In the coming year, 2021, the committee will introduce the most significant change to the artist awards in CAP’s history. The sixty-year process of nomination-based consideration will be replaced by an open call for applications.

After extensive review and discussion, the committee concluded that there is a rich pool of talent in Northeast Ohio that is not getting nominated. This, in turn, means there’s a rich pool of talent that can’t be considered.

The timeline and selection process will remain the same, but artists no longer have to either wait or hope to be nominated. Community input will still be encouraged. The public may still recommend their favorite artists, and CAP will encourage them to apply.

These changes are an important step in making CAP more accessible and inclusive, and they provide an opportunity for the jurors to discover new talent. One more added surprise for 2021 is the launch of a new portfolio submission platform!

Complete guidelines for the new application process will be available in early 2021 before the application window opens on March 1.

Applications are open March 1 to May 1, 2021.

Special prize awards will remain nomination based.
