Still Kicking

Flux Metal Arts, now eight years old, offers safe classes during the COVID pandemic by taking precautions, including sanitizing surfaces, installation of Plexiglass sneeze guards, reduced class sizes, and close-up video on a large screen TV so students can clearly see demonstrations from a distance.

It’s hard to believe we opened eight years ago! So much has happened in the last year—So much. This fall things are understandably a tad different at the studio.

Many of the region’s in-person local-artist sales are cancelled this year, but our artist gallery is OPEN again. Featuring over twenty of your favorite local artists from across Northeast Ohio, a clean and safe jewelry-shopping experience awaits you.

At Flux Metal Arts, we have installed new safety protocols in the studio classroom. Jewelry workbenches are spaced out, with the added protection of Plexiglas “sneeze guards” in place. Class size is currently reduced to six students, and wearing masks is required for all. Plenty of handwashing and cleaning happens throughout the day so we have freshly sanitized tools and benches for you to use.  A camera above the teaching bench projects onto a wall-mounted 55-inch TV, allowing students to view close up demonstrations clearly, while comfortably observing social distancing. We have a range of in-studio classes to select from, including our popular Introduction to Jewelry & Metalsmithing, enameling, metal casting, and more. Look for some “to be announced” online classes as we hope to forge into a new frontier of technology and remote class offerings this fall.

Some of our programming may change as time allows; nevertheless, one thing is for certain: our mission remains the same. We will continue to offer a wide variety of comprehensive classes and workshops in jewelry making and metalworking for students and artists of all levels. We encourage creativity and exploration, and celebrate our diverse artistic community.

As we approach our eight-year anniversary, we hope to celebrate our talented community of students and instructors with two special events. Our Annual Student and Instructor Exhibition tentatively opens Friday, November 6, and runs through Saturday, November 21. Join us as we celebrate their latest jewelry and metalworking creations. The opening reception might be a little different this year, so we encourage you to follow us for updates as circumstances allow. However, we plan to continue the tradition of door prizes and the presentation of a people’s choice award. Many works will be available, and it’s a great way to get a jump on your holiday shopping and support local artists.

Our annual Open House continues the anniversary celebration on Saturday, November 7. Free mini workshops and demos will be scheduled throughout the day for all to enjoy either in person or virtually—only time will tell!

This fall we invite you to visit fluxmetalarts.com for current updates on classes and events as we navigate these uncharted waters together.
