Mimicking the Masters, and more at Cleveland Print Room

Cleveland, Abbey Road, photo by the late Stephen Bivens.

Cleveland Print Room has been building our online, remote-learning offerings for students since going into shutdown mode this past March. Our Mimicking the Masters series features short videos on ten photographers from Teenie Harris and Lorna Simpson to William Eggleston and Sophie Calle, presented in partnership with Tri-C’s Creative Arts Academy.

Teen Institute youth are engaged in weekly CPR Photobox online sessions, with our teaching artists, mentors and Social Emotional Learning therapist Ben Zimmer, creating and sharing their amazing work made at home. Photos will be featured in an upcoming online show and in public art later this year.

We have continued our commitment to capturing the city through our Capturing Cleveland Initiative with two local photographers, Brandon Peck and Ilenia Pezzaniti, covering Cleveland and its suburbs during the recent lockdown and civil unrest. In conjunction with the Cleveland Public Library and funded by the Ohio Arts Council, their work will be shown at the Print Room next year, permanently archived in the CPL Photography Collection, and displayed around the city as public art.

As Cleveland mourns the loss of our friend, photographer, and Print Room teaching artist, Stephen Bivens, we are working with his wife, Jennifer, to set up a memorial fund in honor of Stephen and his commitment to teaching photography and serving as a beloved mentor to our students. For starters, we can confirm that WALL 5 in the Print Room gallery will become a space dedicated to emerging photographers and be memorialized in his name.
