The Morgan Presents Unknown Terrain, an Immersive Installation Art Experience

Unknown Terrain transforms the familiar into the fantastic. Enter the Morgan, an industrial machine shop converted into a 15,000-square-foot arts center. Inside, you’ll find an environment once utilized for industry repurposed for visual arts, an evolution indicative of the very philosophy behind the show. Unknown Terrain features three-dimensional, multimedia artworks designed to invoke the varying relationships between senses, space, and place.

Passage is a handmade paper installation by Danielle Wyckoff that mimics the sensation of being submerged under water, unable to break through the surface. “I think that one of the reasons I love installation art is the feeling of immersion. I’m interested in how we react with our senses, not just with sight but with the way a space feels.” Many of us are familiar with the sensation of being under water slightly out of reach of a surface, such as in a swimming pool. Wyckoff’s work brings such emotional experiences into the physical space of the Morgan.

Wyckoff’s fascination with water and what it could come to represent began years ago with a swimming class at Ohio University. Here, she became more confident in the water and began swimming in the lakes around Athens, where she was immediately drawn to properties of water. “It was magical. You could feel what was around you but you couldn’t really. To me it was a metaphor for the human capacity to love, and loving as this shifting ability that we have—much like water can shift its states of being,” she reflects. “It’s that idea of push and pull, that murkiness…. I’m playing on that ambiguous tension that exists in bodies of water and also in acts of love.”

The World in a Garden by Taryn McMahon

The World in a Garden by Taryn McMahon consists of sixteen large, hanging inkjet banners. Her work uses digital photographs and drawings from visits to ecological sites to investigate our relationship to the natural world. “My artworks interrogate ways that these spaces project our own desires and fantasies of the natural world and our place within it,” she says. She blends digital and hand-drawn print processes to further explore how our interactions with the natural world are mediated through technology and are thus fragmented and selective.

The fluidity between space, place, and experience influences Unknown Terrain, which seeks to highlight the many ways we interact with physical as well as psychological landscapes.

Unknown Terrain features artwork by the Morgan’s founder and artistic director, Tom Balbo, Susan Danko, Danielle Wyckoff, Taryn McMahon, Megan Singleton, and Kristina Paabus. This exhibition is on view July 6 through August 11.
