Summer 2018 at Harris Stanton Gallery
This summer, the Harris Stanton Galleries are excited to be part of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. FRONT—a new collaborative art triennial taking place in Cleveland, Akron, and Oberlin—will explore the ever-changing notion of an American city, and therefore American culture in this divided political time. To compliment FRONT’s theme of “An American City: Eleven Cultural Exercises,” our Cleveland and Akron galleries will have two exhibitions.
In recognition of FRONT’s repainting of Julian Stanczak’s mural in downtown Cleveland, our Cleveland gallery will celebrate the artist’s legacy and ninetieth birthday with an exhibition of his silkscreens from the ’70s and ’80s. This show will also feature Barbara Stanczak’s recent body of stone sculptures. Barbara’s new work uses materials found in nature “that have the history of the earth and the story of their lifecycle imprinted in their veins and textures.” This exhibition will open June 28 at 5:30pm, with Barbara discussing their work at 6:30pm.
Opening July 12, our Akron gallery will feature two views of American cities: an iconic look at the homes we live in (paintings by CIA graduate and Cleveland resident, Diane Pribojan), and the people who live there (paintings that reflect our current American culture by Cleveland artist, Lee Heinen). The opening reception for this show is Thursday, July 12 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. The artists will discuss their work at 6:30pm.
Beginning on August 16, the Akron gallery will also feature a group exhibition of works related to “an American City.” The show will include both regional and international artists and will run until the end of FRONT.
In addition to the exhibitions that we will show during FRONT, the Akron gallery will host Nathan Prebonick’s pop-up show, open June 7 through June 30. Nathan, an Akron native and 2017 graduate of the University of Akron, is in the process of getting his MFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has also been invited to teach at Brown University during his tenure at RISD. This pop-up exhibition will feature his most recent work.
