Members Show and Sticks & Stones at Heights Arts

One of the founding missions of Heights Arts, the Cleveland Heights community arts organization and gallery, has been to encourage Heights residents to become involved in the arts not only as audiences but as active participants. To that end, this spring, Heights Arts is excited to present its first non-juried members show. The exhibition is a way of thanking artist members for their support over the years and celebrating the high level of artistic achievement in the community. The Heights Arts Members Show opens Friday, April 27, with a community reception from 6:00 to 9:00pm, and runs through June 10. Ekprastacy, the popular Heights Arts event featuring artist chats alternating with author readings of original poems inspired by the works in the show, happens Thursday evening, May 24, at 6:00.

Next up in the main gallery is curator Bill Schubert’s show Sticks & Stones, Friday, June 15 to Sunday, July 29. Bill engaged seven artists—Andy Curlowe, Ryan Dewey, Jeanetta Ho, Kevin Kautenburger, Steven Mastroianni, Freeland Southard, and Olga Ziemska—to respond to the simple directive to create work inspired by those most fundamental of earthly materials: sticks and stones. These could be used as materials, tools, subjects, inspiration, or any combination of these. The exhibition includes painting, furniture, sculpture, photography, and more as the artists creatively and imaginatively embraced the directive. Ekprastacy for the Sticks & Stones show is Thursday, July 12, at 6:00.

The spotlight gallery offers opportunities for artist-members of Heights Arts to present concise, one-person exhibitions that complement larger group shows in the main gallery and offer more of an in-depth look at a single artist than can be presented in the gallery shop. On view there through May 6 are works by Jennifer Adams (inspired by the architectural brickwork of Shaker Heights), followed by Christopher Darling (a series focusing on overlooked communities by the widely published illustrator and KSU professor, May 11 to June 24), and Peggy Spaeth (June 29 to August 12—yes, that Peggy Spaeth, founding director of Heights Arts eighteen years ago, and a well-regarded quilt artist even before that).
