Harris Stanton Presents Glass Artists in Cleveland, Art-tini Auction in Akron

This spring the Akron gallery will host its annual Art-tini Auction. This year we are excited to announce it will benefit a scholarship (The Harris Stanton Gallery Scholarship Fund) for a rising senior in the visual arts at the University of Akron. The auction will open for bidding April 5 and close with a vodka-themed party on April 12. Last year we raised over $2,000 for the recipient. It’s a great opportunity for novice collectors and more seasoned ones to start or expand their collection. Bidding on the art starts at a discounted price, 20% below retail, and will feature the gallery’s vast array of local and international fine art. The event gives back to a great cause while supporting our area’s local burgeoning talent.

In April Harris Stanton Gallery in Cleveland will host our first-ever glass exhibition, opening Thursday, April 26. Featured artists are Scott Goss, Marianne Hite, and Timothy Stover. They all work with the translucent material, but that is where their similarities end.

Scott Goss, fused glass.

Scott Goss, fused glass

Goss works two-dimensionally and is deeply inspired by architecture and urban environments. By layering multiple sheets of glass that incorporates painting, drawing, silkscreening and sandblasting he creates layered pieces that are representative of his memories of architecture and scenery from his youth.

Timothy Stover’s graceful three-dimensional glass vases and sculptures are influenced by the mixing of shapes to create optical illusions. The intent of his body of work is to study the effects of contrasting colors, textures, and shapes.

Marianne Hite is influenced by nature and the changing of the seasons. She enjoys the process of layering different materials—such as gold or silver foil, or her own photographs—into her fused glass pieces. She finds inspiration through the distinct and elusive properties of glass and its ability to be manipulated.

A fun addition to our spring lineup will be a pop-up exhibition of our international artist Khehla Chepape Makgato. Some may remember Chepape as the featured artist from our 30th Anniversary Exhibition last summer. We are pleased to announce that during his visit for that exhibition he secured a residency with Zygote Press for this spring. During his tenure here for printmaking at Zygote, the Cleveland gallery will host a small popup of his paintings. Chepape’s work has been exhibited all over the world and he has been featured on CNN. Dates for this exhibition are still pending so stay tuned!
