Elevate presents Sanctus: An Exploration and Celebration of the Holy
Catholicism has impacted art, architecture, literature and spirituality throughout the ages. As the largest Christian religion in the world with 1.2 billion members, it is likely that, Catholic or not, you have been impacted by the faith, its prayers and practices, and its institutions.
Historically, Slavic Village is a largely Catholic and Eastern European neighborhood and the elegant beauty of St. Stanislaus rises tall within the community. In this spirit, Elevate Gallery and curators Sarah Hamski and Joshua Trefney are proud to present Sanctus: Catholic Prayer and Spirituality.
“Art is a holy expression of the human spirit as it relates to the divine, and through art, we can share the depths of our experiences of prayer and spirituality, exposing to one another our very hearts,” said Trefney, a Catholic seminarian at St. Mary Seminary and the Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe. Sarah Hamski is an art therapist and counselor who has been working in the Cleveland area since her graduation from Ursuline College.
Submissions relating to the broadly interpreted theme of Catholic prayer and spirituality are welcome from artists living and working in the Northeast Ohio area. No entry fee is required but submissions are limited to three per person. Send images to sanctus2018@gmail.com by November 30.
Sanctus opens at 6:30 pm Friday, January 5 at Elevate Gallery, 3675 East 65th Street. Music/live performance will also be featured.
Mastroianni Moves to Slavic Village
Steven Mastroianni, celebrated Cleveland artist and photographer, has moved his studio and gallery from Tremont to 5606 Fleet Avenue in Slavic Village. The new location features over a thousand square feet of space and is renamed “Silver Scuro Studio and Gallery.” Silver Scuro’s first large opening is a CD release party for Duo Decibel System on Saturday, November 18 beginning at 7pm. The show will feature a performance by the band as well as an installation of art and photography from the new release, Slow Wave.
“There will be a renewed emphasis on traditional film work and gallery events, as well as continuing commercial photography projects,” Mastroianni said of the new space. He is looking forward to invigorating the gallery schedule in the coming year.
