HEDGE Gallery kicks off the spring season featuring new paintings by Cleveland artist, Katy Richards, who recently returned from a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, where she spent her time working on studies and paintings for her upcoming solo exhibition.

Richards’ recent body of oil paintings are focused on the fluidity of the medium and subject matter of life under water. She focuses on the sensual and slippery qualities of her medium, and her imagery and color palette are inspired by elusive creatures found in the sea.

Her recent use of oceanic subject matter refers back to some earlier works of fleshy subject matters, floating between imagery that can be viewed as both beautiful and grotesque.

Similar to peering through the ocean’s surface, objects within these new paintings flicker between the familiar and the indiscernible. Representation is both informed and lost in this sea of fluids, creating a subject that is in flux between emerging and dissipating.

This exhibit will open Friday, March 17 5-9 pm and will be on view through April 28, 2017. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 am -5 pm, evenings and weekends by appointment and every Third Friday of the month 11 am – 9 pm.
