Once again, in an effort to spread awareness of women’s art, Lakeland Community College gallery coordinator and exhibition curator Mary Urbas leads the initiative to bring Northeast Ohio galleries and studios together for a common purpose: for each gallery to curate its own show dedicated to female art and artists during March to coincide with Women’s History Month. Sixteen venues participated in 2014. This year, there are 40.

 

“I thought, wouldn’t it be a great idea to have area galleries and studios join me in spotlighting Women’s History Month. The initiative helps some lesser known galleries increase their visibility,” said Urbas. “This collaboration strengthens bonds among the artists and the galleries. If the artists succeed, the galleries succeed.”

This is the ninth year that Urbas presents her women-focused exhibit, “From Woman IX: Created by women, of women, and about women,” at Lakeland which runs Feb. 28 – April 1. This year features 33 female artists from Northeast Ohio, Columbus and Indiana.

 

Call for artists

The Gallery at Lakeland invites local and regional artists to submit artworks for judging in the Seventh Annual May Show Juried Art Exhibition, the first week of May 2016. Cash awards include The “Best in Show” prize of $1,500. Drop-off deadline for May Show entries is Monday, May 9.
