Ceramic artist Angelica Pozo’s brick and glass Word Wall at the intersection of Buckeye Road and East 116 Street is built to last, and to complement its surroundings. Pozo is one of several artists commissioned to create sculptural work in the neighborhood. Once she developed the concept, she asked author and bookstore proprietor RA Washington to choose the lines of poetry that wind around it like a garland. Poets represented include Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Arna Bontemps, Nikki Giovanni, Etheridge Knight, James Weldon Johnson, Amiri Baraka, Lucille Clifton, Audre Lorde, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Alice Walker. Pozo has created an extensive list of public art installations in Cleveland, including the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Wall in University Circle, The Winding Wall of Fairfax History in Fairfax, Instrumental Interludes at Buckeye Park, dozens of collaborative installations in schools, and many others in Cleveland, Columbus, and Baltimore. The Word Wall was commissioned by Buckeye Area Development Corporation, with a grant from Neighborhood Progress, Incorporated. Pozo says, “Public art is most successful when coexisting with the space and the people who use it, and not just serving as the lovely carnation on a handsomely tailored suit.”
