Pure Color: Pastels from the Cleveland Museum of Art
November 19-March 19, 2019
With the movement’s grounding in capturing light, pastels on paper was a popular medium with Impressionists such as Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. The Société des Pastellistes de France was founded in 1885 to support this genre of work, and the interest in pastels’ ability to render a range of subtle, fleeting effects continued to attract Post-Impressionists such as Odilon Redon and Modernists such as Gino Severini. Pure Color features the work of late 19th and 20th century artists pulled together from the museum’s own collection.

December 2-January 7, 2017
Opening reception December 2 5- 8pm
Clevelander Laurence Channing and Columbus resident Christopher Burk both ground their work in the mundane aspects of the urban landscape. Channing’s charcoals feature homely nooks of the urban environment rendered in a fleeting, soft-edged manner, as if glimpsed out of the corner of the eye in passing, while landscape painter Burk hones in on rooftops and utility lines painted with photographic verisimilitude. Channing’s work is familiar to locals — he’s been represented by Bonfoey since 1998 — but it’s Burk’s first show there.

All Together Now: New Work From Gallery Artists
Now in its second year, 2731 Prospect Gallery, takes a look back — and ahead — with this group show of artists it’s shown in that time and artists on its roster who have future shows. Most of them — Christi Birchfield, Jerry Birchfield, Tim Callaghan, Elizabeth Emery, Andrea Joki, Aaron Koehn, Hildur Asgeirsdottir Jonsson and Jason Milburn — will be familiar patrons of the space’s former tenant, William Busta Gallery. Laura Bidwa, Michelle Murphy, Dale Rothenberg and Joseph Minek are newer to this gallery, though the latter three have had exhibitions at 2731 in the past year. And Brandon Juhasz is new to this gallery, but but certainly not to the Cleveland art scene.

DayGlo 5 Show
January 6-February 12
Opening Reception 5-9pm January 6
The Day-Glo Show, challenging artists to create works using this headquartered-in-Cleveland fluorescent paint, began at Tremont’s scrappy little Doubting Thomas Gallery before moving to Waterloo for its 4th iteration last year. With its blacklight-enabled psychedelic quality, the medium gives the participating artists license to come up with work that’s fun, sometimes goofy and mind-bending.

Opening reception 5-8pm, January 13
Tricia Kaman, one of the cornerstones of Cleveland’s original art neighborhood, Little Italy, has been painting her insightful, approachable portraits from live models for 40 years. She’s especially drawn to women and, in this show ay Ohio’s oldest women’s college, she looks at women as they snatch moments of reflection and introspection from the often overwhelming demands of their multitasking lives– moments she calls “a beautiful necessity.” She’ll be doing a free lecture and a workshop at the gallery on January 31.

Conversation with artists at 4pm; opening reception 5-8pm; dance performance by Kathleen Diehl in Kmieck’s space at 6pm January 20.
Anne Kmieck’s art explores what it means to be a woman physically, emotionally and especially spiritually, using something most intimately associated with her: her garments. In Riparazioni: Meditations on the Fullness of Being (Women), she creates fabric sculptures in the form of dresses that stand for the lives of legendary women religious figures including Hildegarde of Bingen, Jeanne D’arc and, of course, Mary, as well as lesser known and even apocryphal figures. She’s been working on the project for nearly a decade and the installation, promises gallery director Robert Thurmer, is stunning.

Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose
Toronto-based Hi-Fructose magazine, founded in 2005, calls itself “the new contemporary art magazine.” What that means in practice is that it covers an eclectic gamut artists, both new and established, both those who have all the proper academic/gallery credentials and those who might be termed “outsider” or “lowbrow” artists. This touring exhibit looks back at its first decade, featuring 51 artists who have appeared in the magazine and media ranging from painting, drawing and sculpture to video and mixed media.

Liz Maugans: Irreverent Sketches/And The Things That (I Think) People Are Thinking: The City Pool and People In Church
The title of Maugans’ latest show captures its informal, quotidian quality. The sketches have what she describes as a “plein air kind of thing” going on, only instead of landscapes, ordinary people whose types patrons of BAYarts will surely recognize are the subject matter. To add to their engagingly whimsical quality, she’s iimagined phrases and comments her subject might be casually thinking as they loll by the poll or heir attention wanders during the sermon.
