Artist Statement:

Rarely in an artist’s career does the opportunity arise to produce a magnificent body of work for a beneficent and supportive patron. Commissioned by the current owner in the fall of 2013, I was invited to spend the ensuing Seasons working in and around the Salmon Halle House. Located on five acres across from the entrance to Horseshoe Lake Park, the House was designed by J. W. C. Corbusier et al. and finished in 1929. The House was declared a Shaker Heights landmark in 1976 and was recently renovated and restored by its current owners.

My commission was to study the House and Grounds throughout the changing Seasons and document it accordingly. I visited the House in all weathers imaginable and was stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing my appointed course with all due speed. I produced over 350 8 x 10 black and white negatives of the House and property, of which a formal portfolio of 60 platinum photographs was presented to the owners at the project’s end.

To be respected, to be allowed to photograph without oversight or hindrance, to be given free reign to explore a private park and to enjoy the elegant solitude of a manor well cared for; what better inspiration can be had to create?

Herb Ascherman, Jr. is an internationally respected fine art photographer who is known for his platinum print process and superb portraits. Ascherman has been working for over 40 years and examples of his photography are found in international collections around the world.

The Halle House:

The Halle House is an extraordinary home in Shaker Heights, built in 1927 for Mr. Salmon P. C. Halle, co-founder of the former Cleveland department store. Corbusier, Lenski and Foster designed the mansion in the French Neoclassical style. On August 23, 1976, this residence was designated a Shaker Heights landmark. In 2015 Ascherman captured the mansion and its grounds throughout the seasons. This Shaker Heights native son delivers a unique quality in his platinum prints that evokes the grandeur of this special private residence.
