Summit Artspace Spotlight: In-Studio Field Experience Introduces Students to Local Artists

Students visiting artist studios at Summit Artspace.

Summit Artspace believes that local artists embody entrepreneurship, and the Akron artist hub has launched a distinctive field trip experience to invite middle and high school students to learn more first-hand.

By connecting students with local artists, the program inspires and motivates young adults to lean into their own artistic potential and support it in others. Schools are encouraged to use the opportunity to help students foster new connections and form new interests.

While visiting Summit Artspace, students will have opportunities to:

• engage with artists and explore the arts as a viable career path
• delve into entrepreneurship and self-advocacy through activities and discussions
• ask essential questions about artistic practices and the people and organizations partnering in the work.

“Studies show that unhelpful stereotypes about artists belie the truth,” explains Nyki Fetterman, Summit Artspace’s curriculum specialist and teaching artist. “The creativity artists channel in their artistic output actually amplifies their abilities in business. We want to break down misperceptions to show how artists generate and test ideas, set and achieve goals, develop resources, and build networks.”

Summit Artspace’s resident artists are integral to the In-Studio program, opening their studios to teach students how to create, explore, and connect. Students bring questions about artwork creation, marketing principles, collaboration, and planning. They challenge themselves to think differently, discover new career paths, and reflect on the skills needed to think outside of any box.

What’s more, In-Studio supports vital State of Ohio curriculum benchmarks in English Language Arts, Visual Arts, and Career Field Technical Content Standards in Arts and Communication like employability and business literacy.

“It’s important for students to have these types of opportunities so that they receive encouragement and validation that pursuing a career in the arts is ok and necessary.”

April Couch, a resident artist in the In-Studio program, explained: “Seeing working artists in their environment helps them to realize what’s possible.”
