Headlights and Athletes
Athletes perform incredible feats, unbelievable flips, spins, and jumps, achieving record speeds on pavement, ice, snow, and through water—while the wannabees can only stare, slack-jawed, admiring from a distance. Yet, there is an overwhelming number of humans who jump off the board of a job description into the deep end of a compelling mission, a cause, a need.
What is it that we bring from our past? Is it our education, our experiences of the world around us, aspirations, the excitement of inspiration? Then there is the labor of realization—day-to-day challenges, revenue rollercoasters, funders’ shifting priorities, pendulums of current trends, the goal/objective squeeze of new program initiatives weighed against an organization’s actual capacity, pay equity, benefits, etc., etc. Progress is incremental, so often invisible. What carries us forward? Envisioning an expanding circle that includes everyone, unlocking the creative sparks in all who come under the wing of a deep arts experience, the urge to change the world?
We continue to stare into the headlights of possible futures, that distant, beautiful horizon. Even if mesmerized, we are not standing still. We juggle, flex, race, jump over hurdles, and carry huge loads over extended periods of time.
Hmmm…. who are we celebrating as athletes?
