Summer 2022 Events
Your easy, chronological guide to exhibits and opportunities at Northeast Ohio galleries,
studios, and museums coming in the next few months. More information about many of
these exhibits can be found elsewhere in the pages of CAN Journal.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, some of the indoor art events planned for the season have limited admission,
and while almost all of them remain free, some require pre-registration. At press time, many in-person
indoor events require wearing facial covering.
These listings are based on announcements from each presenting organization, at press time. Depending
on the course of the disease and trends in rates of infection, events may be added, cancelled, or postponed.
Check the CAN Weekly e-newsletter for the most up-to-date information. To subscribe to the free CAN Weekly, visit CANjournal.org and look for the “Join Our Email List” button on the right side of your screen.

Hildur Jonsson and Brinsley Tyrrell
The relatively new Abbatoir Gallery has been featuring many out-of-town artists, but this show
focuses on two Northeast Ohio artists with national/ international reputations. Hildur Jonsson’s intricate,
abstract weavings are inspired by the topography of her native Iceland and have been shown there as
well as in New York. Sculptor Brinsley Tyrrell has long worked in diverse materials (stone, metal, plaster,
clay), but most recently he’s expanded into ceramics, inspired, as Jonsson is, by nature, in his case, in rural
Ohio where he lives.

The Big Photography Show
Gallery owner Barbara Merritt invited 16 mostly well-known area photographers, whose work covers a
variety of styles and subjects, to select 1-3 images to blow up into large-scale photos, with sizes ranging from 16 x 20 inches and up. “The subtleties that we as photographers work hard to achieve often go unnoticed throughout web content,” she says. “This is a chance to see the talent that lies behind each photograph and the hard work that goes into each print.”

Embedded: Work by Bryana Bibbs, Sam Dienst & Andrea Vail
Embedded showcases three artists’ different approaches to tapestry weaving. Chicago-based Bryana
Bibbs is a textile artist/painter whose work combines the two disciplines. Sam Dienst, currently working
in Detroit, uses objects from her day-to-day life as jumping points for a form of self-portraiture. And North Carolina’s Andrea Vail uses objects of American society considered obsolete or unappealing to contemporary eyes in her tapestries and woven sculptures.

Queer Ecology Hanky Project
Vanessa Adams and Mary Tremonte organized more than 120 artist-created bandanas into a show that
explores a range of approaches, attitudes, ideas and theories about gender and sexuality. Its conceptual
root is the “hanky code” once used by gay men to visually indicate to strangers their sexual proclivities.
But these artists use their hanky designs to display a much wider range of interests and affinities that
“speaks to the diversity of queer experiences.” The curators say, “We hope these hankies will accompany
walks in the woods, accessorize outfits at queer dance parties, bundle up foraged mushrooms and start
conversations.”

Abandoned America:
Everything Must Pass Photographer Matthew Christopher works in the trendy subject area that’s been dubbed “ruin porn:” images of abandonment, neglect and decay, particularly in urban areas. For Christopher, who’s published several books, this is about preserving memories of the function and role of these structures in a once-flourishing industrial society, creating “a eulogy for the lost ways of life they represent,” and perhaps even offering a blueprint for the future. Variable Speed: Works by Katy
Clark and R!ch Cihlar
This show of work in diverse media, styles and techniques by gallery co-owner C!hlar and Madison, Wisconsin, artist Katy Clark revolves around birds in all their manifestations, singly and in groups, attempting to capture “the essence of the wonder of flight.” C!hlar’s work draws on his roots in street art, featuring spray-painted stenciled images and found objects, while Clark renders hers in acrylic,
gouache, watercolor, pen/ink, and cut-paper collage, offering two contrasting approaches
to the same subject.
