ARTneo Presents Drawn to Clay: The Alchemy of the Elements

Sandy Miller

This exhibition presents the work of four Northeast Ohio women who all have decades of experience in the ceramic arts. The natural world has provided much inspiration for these artists who are moved by the infinite variation in process, form, and color found in nature. Their overlapping interests and differences highlight contemporary developments in regional ceramics.

Beth Lindenberger

Donna Webb and Beth Lindenberger have each explored methods to reimagine organic objects and reveal their endless variety and adaptability. They have also collaborated on a number of special installation projects that resemble galactic constellations or oceanic microcolonies. Andrea LeBlond strives to represent a natural order and balance in her work that reflects the process of structure and disintegration of organic forms. Sandy Miller creates elegant, balanced forms that are reminiscent of sacred vessels, often finished with organic and woven fibrous materials.

From the beginning of time, humans have learned how to take malleable clay from the earth and create useful items for eating and drinking, as well as items of a purely artistic expression. The process of working with clay is very physical. Forms are constructed by throwing or hand building, followed by carving or adding elements and finishes. The alchemy of ceramics utilizes the basic elements of earth, water, fire and air. The artist knows how to direct these processes, like a dance with endless variations.

Northeast Ohio has a long and celebrated history of excellence in the ceramic arts and ARTneo is proud to contribute this exhibition of contemporary women artists.
