No Woman is an Island

This June, we are excited to present No Woman Is An Island: Works by Da’Shaunae Marisa Jackson. Jackson, a Cleveland Foundation Minority Arts and Education Fund grant recipient, was a fellow at the Cleveland Print Room in 2020. This exhibition will be featured on our website beginning Friday, June 4, and in our gallery with scheduled visits available starting Saturday, June 5.

Having dealt with her mother’s death from cancer last year at age 49, Jackson writes in her artist statement: “African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the US for most cancers. This project is here to take a deeper look into the connection of how diet, mental health, & socioeconomics play a factor in the destruction of African American health in a systemically oppressive society.”

As we did last year, our annual national juried exhibition, the Peer Show, will once again be shown entirely online. The digital gallery featuring up to fifty artworks of all mediums from across the country will go live on our website, Friday, July 2. This year, the show will be juried by Courtenay A. Barton of The Cleveland Foundation; Peter J. Cohen, a New York-based collector of snapshots and vernacular photography; and Andrea Gyorody, a curator at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College. Along with cash prizes in six categories, the winners of Best in Show and the Director’s Award will also win a joint exhibition at the Cleveland Print Room in 2022.
