A Deep Dive into a Dream

Sarah Kabot: October 5th. Graphite and gouache on Durala. 11 x 14 inches, 2020.

My headlights are the only source of light on the heavily wooded forest road. There is no moon, and I am starting to get nervous about what may—or may not—be in front of me. At one point, I stop the car and get out, engine running. I have stopped only a few feet from a precipice. There is a diving board, silvery and sleek, sticking out from the edge and lit by the headlights. It is inviting and exhilarating to step onto it and see what is below. In dream distance, swimmers are both far away and close by, lazily floating in starlit waters that reflect the slight silvery glow of the lights above. They are relaxed; they call to me to come in. I take my shoes off and jump. The water is renewal, it is safe, and I am in my element. The stars are so bright and plentiful. I am in the right place. I took the deep dive.

After co-founding Zygote Press in 1996, and then working as an institutional curator for almost fourteen years, I have turned a new page. In late 2019, I purchased Zygote’s Ink House building in the Waterloo Arts District, changed its name to “The Deep End,” and thus Deep Dive Art Projects, LLC was born. At DDAP, I am able to offer services as both a consultant—for curatorial, art practice or program development—and a printmaker/artist—working with artists and others to edition and publish fine art prints. The downstairs printshop is intimate and perfect for small projects, and an upstairs meeting space also offers pop-up shows of artists exploring work in paper-and print-based media several times a year. Please make an appointment and stop by for a visit to see what is happening at The Deep End! Visit deepdiveart.com to find out more.
