Cleveland Print Room: Virtually, or In-Person, by Appointment

After being apprehended, a detainee’s belongings are either placed in a property bag or remain in the backpack they traveled with. Sometimes essential items such as wallets and personal identification is discarded. Photograph by Tom Kiefer.

As the pandemic rages into the colder months of the year, Cleveland Print Room is likewise continuing to rage in our efforts to keep bringing the finest in photographic art to our community, both virtually and by appointment for socially-distanced, COVID-responsible in-person viewings.

To that end, we are excited this season to be presenting El Sueño Americano–The American Dream: Photographs by Tom Kiefer. Kiefer, formerly a janitor at a migrant detention center in Arizona, turned items confiscated from detainees into art by secretly rescuing belongings destined for the trash and photographing them to honor their original owners. After last year’s showing of this series in Los Angeles, Kiefer’s timely work went viral. This emotionally moving exhibition can be seen online at our website and by appointment in the Print Room gallery through January 16.

We are also pleased to welcome Orlando Caraballo as our new education director. A native of Cleveland, and a Cleveland Institute of Art graduate, Orlando comes to CPR after working in community engagement at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Orlando is excited to help build upon the work being done at the Cleveland Print Room by bringing an admirable and ambitious vision to our education department and organization. As Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire said, “Dialogue cannot exist without humility”—an attitude that Orlando’s practice has embraced, and one he hopes to bring to the Print Room’s strong commitment to community-centered work that teaches and empowers through thoughtful dialogue and experiential action.
