Hartshorn Studios: Compulsion and Collaboration

Channeling the passion of three generations of artists before him, Rob Hartshorn was born with the urge to push paint. He spent years in a long string of studios painting, often meticulously hunched over a canvas; other times slashing paint in a loose vibrato of pigment and turpentine. But after working alone for more than 20 years, it was inevitable that seven years ago Rob began looking in the artist enclave of Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, with the hope of creating a space in which to both make and exhibit work, inviting established and emerging artists to join him. With business partners, Rob opened his studio-gallery in 2007 at the corner of Professor and College, a portrait of his artist grandfather Walter at his shoulder.

Many canvases later, Hartshorn Studios is home to a growing community of full time painters, sculptors, and photographers, serving an international clientele who seek artwork of elegance, craftsmanship, and inspiration. The space functions as both an artists’ workshop and a luxury retail gallery. The Studios are invested in enriching the community through sharing skills and encouraging other artists. The experience of Hartshorn Studios is one of energetic collaboration, open to all. Featured throughout is the art of sculptor Fred Gearhart and painter Lila Rose.

Three veins of painting occupy Rob’s work: traditional portrait painting in oil and pastel; abstract landscapes; and figurative studies. Known for his luminous glazing and attention to detail, Rob is commissioned to paint exacting portraits of prominent executives, families and civic leaders internationally. In contradiction, his large vibrant abstract paintings adorn the walls of local restaurants, including Fahrenheit in Tremont and the new Aloft Hotel. In another turn, a renowned art publisher represents Rob’s sensitive figure studies in galleries throughout the country.

In the spirit of collaboration, Rob invited Lila Rose, a recent arts graduate, newcomer to Cleveland and prolific painter herself, to join the team. Lila apprenticed with the Studio in 2012, producing dramatic water -themed abstract paintings. Now, as a full time working artist, she is sought after for large scale commissions and is investigating the atmospheric effects of light with delicate glazes and textures of acrylic medium. With Lila’s expertise as Gallery Manager, Hartshorn Studios has lined up important new programs and events for 2014.
